ACL fest 2008

The lineup for this year’s Austin City Limits music festival has been released. Headlining this year are Pearl Jam, Dave Mathews Band, Beastie Boys, and Ben Harper. There will be a total of 130 bands on 8 stages over 3 days in early October.  I went two years ago and had an amazing time despite the relentless dust and heat. I hear that they’ve installed irrigation systems and different landscaping to minimize the dust though in recent years. If you have any interest in going,  I recommend that you go ahead and buy tickets before they sell out (and they will). If you change your mind you can always sell them on craigslist later. Check out the full lineup and ticket information on the official ACL website.

Quick facts of little value: Last year’s attendance was roughly 43,000 over the course of the weekend. The festival was estimated to have produced 34.5 million in economic impact dollars for Austin.

Early Voting has begun for city races

Make sure you get out and vote in the upcoming city elections for mayor as well as city council seats 1, 2, 5, and 6.  You can get a decent idea of the differences in the top two mayoral candidates on this video debate, although I would only recommend you watch in case of extreme boredom. I’m voting for the following candidates:

Mayor: Brewster McCracken

Place 1 council-member: Chris Riley, Place 2 council-member: Mike Martinez (incumbent), Place 5 council-member: Bill Spelman (running unopposed), Place 6: Sheryl Cole

You can find most of the candidates websites listed here. There aren’t any huge battles going this year but you should still vote because it helps to reduce the risk for heart disease.

Help shape the future of Waller Creek

One of the nicer views of the creek

Work on the Waller Creek waterway continues to move along, although like other city projects, very slowly. Whenever it does get done it should be a pretty exciting project. The idea is to remove acres of downtown property from the flood zone by allowing storm runoff a channel to move into Town Lake. Once the actual tunnel work is done there should be a boon of development along the creek. The planning body is holding a forum to accept ideas on what that development should look like. Ideas have ranged from a river walk-type experience (think San Antonio) all the way to a world-class kayak course. If you care to give input you can see more information here.

Looking for work? Austin’s your best bet (according to Forbes)

26 04 2009

Forbes has just completed their rankings for the best cities for jobs in the U.S. Austin tops the list with a 1% growth rate last year. Most cities experienced a net loss of jobs last year as the economy dove into recession. Austin continues to butt the trend in most areas of economics including jobs, home sales, and new businesses relocating to town. Feel free to read more and gloat about your hometown, read more here.

Where did the transparancy go? (the email handshake)

26 04 2009

e-handshakeIt seems these days that email or text message is the first means to communicate. Why is that? I’m all for the easy flow of information and those are two great means to move things along.  But there are times where a phone call or an actual personal visit are better,  much better.  As our ability to communicate without personal interaction increases, we need to be ever mindful of our responsibility to communicate in person. Communicating in person will become more valuable in the coming years and we all need to step up our commitment to personal relationships.  So next time you have some difficult or complicated news to pass along, pick up the phone and talk like we all did growing up. (BTW, if you need to “communicate” with me, its 512.731.7232.) The inspiration for this post comes from an article from the New York Times, titled “The Email Handshake”
